Nigerian international Odion Ighalo has finally explained the rationale behind the yellow card he received after scoring the first goal against Cameroon in Uyo on September 1. The striker opened the scoring for the Super Eagles in the 30th minutes, but he was shown a yellow card during his celebration by Egyptian referee Ghead Grisha.
Ighalo has now stated that the referee booked him because he publicly displayed a religious message on his T-shirt after scoring the goal. I was booked for thanking Jesus – Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo ”The referee told me that he did not booked me for my celebration, but for the religious message which is thank you Jesus that is on my shirt,” the former Watford forward explained.
Fifa bans any unsanctioned political, religious or commercial messages on shirts, and Nigeria may be fined for running foul of the rules if the incident is included in the match report.
