9JA STORY: T.A.O.T (EP 33)

The food turned sour in my mouth when her friend Daisy came in. Oyinade’s Daisy was my own Desola. “What is the correlation between ‘Desola’ and ‘Daisy’?” I thought to myself. I couldn’t believe my eyes, neither could she believe hers. Everything she did and said just came back to me like a flash. ”Mummy, it isn’t my fault. He’s been harrasing me sexually since the first week he came. I didn’t want to tell you because I knew how much you trusted him and would not believe me. He even threatened to hurt me if I don’t comply. I was totally helpless, because since I failed JAMB, I know I will be in this house for quite a while. And asides that, you leave in the morning and come back in the evening everyday. I’m sorry mum. I just wanted to be safe”. I was really boiling with anger, but tried as much as possible to hide it. As for Desola, she probably wouldn’t have believed that I was going to be a student of UNILAG, but as for me, I wasn’t surprised to see her there, because that was the reason why she stayed at home for a year. ”UNILAG or Nothing else” She said.

“You guys know each other?” Oyinade who had been observing our gestures asked. “His face is quite farmiliar! But I really can’t remember where”. Desola answered. At this point, my anger and hatred for her heightened. “Why would she say that my face is familiar after all she has done in my life. After telling such a big lie against me. What if her mum had arrested me?” Those were my thoughts, but I couldn’t put them into actions because Oyinade was there, and when I narrated the story to her, that was the only part I wasn’t sincere about. Maybe if I was sincere from the begining, opening up to her wouldn’t have been a big deal.

Desola dropped something in her bag and left the room immediately. Immediately she left the room, I started feeling uncomfortable. “Are you sure you’re fine?” Oyinade asked me. “I’m fine please, I would be going soon”. I answered. “And you said you’re fine? I thought you were going to stay longer. You haven’t even finished your food.” She said to me. I forced myself to finish the rice, took some water and left her room immediately. Oyinade walked me half-way and went back to her room. When I got to my room, they had already locked the door because they had slept. Aliyu woke up to open the door for me, and went back to sleep. I couldn’t sleep, I was just thinking about why fate had to put the Oyinade who could catch a grenade for me in the same room with the Dangerous girl called Desola that turned herself to Daisy who almost ruined my life completely.

It was morning, I went to the bathroom to take a bath, and before I came back, I had received a new text message from Oyinade, I took my phone to read. ”Good morning Tolu, I really don’t know what happened yesterday. You were in my room, but immediately you saw my roommate, it was as if you were totally distracted. Is there something you are not telling me? If you like her, you can tell me, I can help you. #winks. Have a nice day!” I started feeling guilty about the whole situation. I felt that I was doing the same thing I did in secondary school – hiding the truth from my best friend. I dressed and went to my faculty to submit other documents and complete my registration.

It was less stressful than the previous day. I was able to submit all the necessary things due for submission. But there were documents I was supposed to sign. The man we were supposed to sign with was not around so we were going to sign the following day. I went back to my hostel around 1pm. On getting to my hostel, I got a call from Dammy that she was going to come check on me in the evening. I started chatting and browsing on my phone. Dammy called me around 5pm that she was at the entrance. She could not enter alone so that ‘Jaja boys’ won’t savage her. So I went to the entrance to escort her in
