So what causes Lymphoma?
According to well known Doctor, Dr Olufunmilayo (@Drolufunmilayo via Twitter) he gave a detailed explanation of likely details below.
IN HIS EXACT WORDS:
There’s no exact cause of lymphoma
But there are risk factors that increase the chance of developing it, such as a weak immune system.
Having risk factors does not mean you will get lymphoma. Infact many people with lymphoma have no risk factors at all.
There are two main types of lymphomas. (The non-hodgkin and the Hodgkin lymphoma). Even though there are other types too- but I won’t bother you with undue details.
There is no known cause for any lymphoma regardless of the type. However some people may have higher risks for it.
General risk factors for lymphoma:
If you are between 15-40 years old,
If you are also older than 55years old,
If you are a man (some types are also commoner in women),
If you already have a weak immune system- like uncontrolled diabetes, previous organ transplant, HIV/AIDS etc;
If you have a close family member who had lymphoma- or a related cancer;
If you were exposed to radiation- maybe from work or from previous cancer treatment,
If you were exposed to benzene or other chemicals (pesticide/insecticide) used to kill weeds, stubborn grass or insects;
What are the signs of Lymphoma?
•Painless swelling in your neck, armpits or groin
•Shortness of breath
•Unexplained weight loss
•Continuous itching skin
•Sometimes excess bleeding like nosebleeds and heavy periods.
On a final note, if you or someone you know has any of these symptoms and you are worried, pls see a doctor.
Blood tests, chest X-rays, biopsy and special scans can be arranged to make diagnosis.
Treatment will depend on the type and the stage of the cancer. Thanks for reading.
