Dr. Alero Roberts, a Consultant, Public Health Physician, has opined that Nigeria may not have the capacity to distribute the COVID-19 vaccines safely across the country because of logistics challenges.
Speaking Tuesday on Channels Television breakfast programme ‘Sunrise Daily’, she listed some of the logistics challenges as Nigeria’s lack of capacity to transport the vaccines in the extreme cold condition to preserve the efficacy of the vaccines.
According to her, “keeping the vaccines refrigerated under zero degree centigrade from the point of dispatch abroad to all health facilities in Nigeria is a big problem here because our health and roads infrastructure are in bad shape”.
On Nigeria’s chances of getting the vaccines from developed nations, she said Nigeria is a strong member of World Health Organisation (WHO) and will definitely get vaccines supply but said the biggest problem is the distribution of the medicines.
However, Dr. Roberts who is also a Senior Lecturer, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, said there are corporate companies that specialize in logistics that could be approached to handle the distribution of the Covid-19 vaccines across Nigeria.
On the resurgence of Covid-19 positive cases in Nigeria, she said that adherence to all the recommended health protocols including Physical Distancing and use of Face Masks remain the best safety measures.
Dr. Roberts lamented that Nigeria is not testing enough but argued that, “if we test more how do we handle the large number of people testing positive for the infection”
