Ayuba Wabba, the NLC president justified the stand by lecturers on the strike. Wabba stated that public universities would resume if the issues raised by the academic union are resolved.
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has said the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has not called off its strike because some issues raised by the union have not been attended to.
The president of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba on Tuesday, November 17, said the labour union could not advise ASUU to call off its strike until the pending issues are resolved with the government.
He said:
“Clearly speaking, I think it should be a priority if the issues are resolved so that we could get our wards back to schools.”
The labour leader advised the federal government to show enough commitment in resolving the disagreement with university lecturers.
Meanwhile, ASUU has raised serious doubts about the readiness of the federal government to end the ongoing strike by lecturers in public universities this year.
The Lagos zonal coordinator of ASUU, Olusiji Sowande faulted the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige for disclosing that pertinent data required to engage the union were now being collected.
Sowande said the fact that the data were just being collected after several meetings with the union showed that the government’s team has been wasting time.
In another news, the federal government and ASUU have been urged to shift grounds over the ongoing strike in public universities.
The call was made by governors who are worried by the shutdown of the nation’s universities for about eight months, The Nation reports.
According to the governors, the federal government should create a temporary salary payment window pending the outcome of the ongoing testing of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) recommended by ASUU.
